With a new novel, one of the first things you do is decide on a setting for the story. It may be a small town, a school, a large skyscraper, or maybe a fantasy world. Once the setting has been chosen, your next decision is where to stage the action of your story within your larger setting. You may end up with a dozen or more of these settings within a setting. Each should have purpose and help move the story forward.
I am always on the lookout for these places that will make a story more interesting. When I see one, out comes the smartphone and I store the image away for a future chapter.
